The homeowners contacted JimAV early in the build out based on a recommendation from their electrician.   They had several goals in mind for this new space to accommodate their growing family.

  1. They wanted a large display (TV) well suited to watching sports.
  2. They wanted the system to out perform their existing family room system upstairs.
  3. They wanted the AV equipment wired to a location away from the display.
  4. They wanted a second display (TV) installed where it could be seen from the exercise equipment.
  5. They were considering recessing the main TV into the wall.
  6. They wanted modern sources available like Netflix Streaming Video and iTunes Music & Movies.

This media room was built in a newly finished basement.  The entire basement was finished including the following areas.

  • Media Room with seating area
  • Exercise Area
  • Billiards Area
  • Bathroom
  • Unfinished Storage Area

JimAV developed and revised plans a couple times to help the homeowners revise and prioritized their goals.  The result was this large well tailored entertainment space.

Since the homeowners contracted JimAV early in the build out we were able to consider all possible options and accomodate all the things on the wish list.  Early in the design phase the homeowners decided that recessing the TV into the wall was not worth the construction expense involved.  Instead JimAV recommended a flush mounted TV as an alternative which achieved the neat appearance they were hoping to achieve.

Shown during wiring: The rooms were wired, and speaker brackets were installed to accomodate the speakers in the post construction phase.  Framing adjustments were made for the Center Channel speaker located in the lower center of the wall below the future TV location. The framing studs were reenforced to insure a stable surface for mounting the TV in the next phase.

Because this is an outside wall, speakers with fully enclosed back boxes were specified to insure performance would not be impeded by the lack of any sheetrock covering the back side of this wall.  The use of fully enclosed speakers prevents the speakers from interfering with each other in the shared airspace between the room and the cement foundation wall.  If open back speakers were used instead the interference between speakers would result in pressure from the movement of one speaker to cause the other speakers to move in the opposite direction.  This interference greatly reduces the performance of even a well built open back speaker as those speakers are design for walls with a sealed air space behind them.

Media Room Sreen Left

This basement is quite large with several adjoining spaces all connected to one another.  Because the homeowners wanted a high performance sound system in this large space we specified fairly large, high quality speakers and used two sub woofers.  The two sub woofers balance the speakers visual appearance on the wall and they more than double the level of sound performance, because you have twice the output from two different locations eliminating acoustical anomalies from a single location sub woofer.

The Billiards room, adjacent to the media room, features ceiling mounted speakers for music.  The home owners really enjoy their new finished basement and this system really brings the games to life.
